Oxford, England. 1932
Iris Titherley, an English equestrian and horse trainer, meets Ata Mohammad Khan Leghari, an Indian student at Oxford University with a feudal background. They fall in love, marry and move to India where Ata joins the prestigious Indian Civil Service.
Iris, a foreigner in a faraway land, struggles at first to make sense of the culture and traditions in her adopted country but spends her time hunting bulls, riding into the hills and shooting with tribesmen. In time, she finds camaraderie with the locals and respect within the family.
