Prisoner of Conscience: Badshah Khan
Amazing figure, in the crucial pre- Independence history of the subcontinent and post-Independence decades of Pakistani history. True the historian cannot uphold Badshah Khan as a political leader, a mystic or saint—as it lies beyond the purview of political history, but in dealing with him must apply the same standards of judgment and criticism as having been applied to all of his statures, to be reviewed without passion or prejudice, must begin by discounting the halo of semi-divinity—and therefore also of infallibility—which was cast round Badshah Khan during his life and continues to a large extent even now, thanks to the propaganda to exploit his name for political purposes.
An elegant personality, brilliant intellect, blotless character, and high sense of patriotism he rose on the Indian firmament like a meteor, dazzling his friends and critic alike by his versatile genius and excellence of performance.
Having regular habits, shunned shows and processions and could sweep audiences off their feet by the direct, simple, incisive eloquence of his speech, a man of the people, the great political leaders of the Congress came to look upon Badshah Khan as a superman, who was infallible and acted by instinct, not logic or reason.
This has been very frankly stated by Jawaharlal Nehru, who wrote that “Badshah Khan was a unique personality and it was impossible to judge him by the usual standards, or even to apply the ordinary canons of logic to him, no wonder that lesser men looked upon him almost as a divine being, the truth of whose words and views must not be questioned on any account’’.
I yield to none in my inclination to this saint and the humanitarian. But as the author of this volume, I am only concerned with the part he played in the struggle for India’s freedom from the British yoke, to view his life and activities, thoughts, and feelings primarily from a narrow-angle, as a visionary leading a great political organization (in his case the Khudai Kidhmathgars) formed with an object, to achieve India’s freedom from political bondage.
It has been my painful duty to show him from this point of view and to uphold the great ideal of truth which was so dear to Badshah khan himself.
